If you enjoy the Saint Louis Science Center or just love outdoor summer music and food events, the Science at Sunset event series on Thursdays present a perfect, fun after-hours experience. From June 7-Aug. 9, the Science Center will extend its hours till 8 p.m. each Thursday during its third annual Science at Sunset.
“Whether you’re coming here for happy hour or looking for a fun activity for the whole family, we have so many cool things going on, including live music and food and drink specials outside in GROW, free space-themed movies at the OMNIMAX® Theater and special hands-on activities. Plus, guests will get discounted admission to our Special Exhibition Destination Moon: The Apollo 11 Mission,” says Saint Louis Science Center Chief Marketing and Communications Officer Ann Balsamo. “There will be three to four activity carts throughout our GROW gallery, including games and scavenger hunts.”
The menu will feature delicious smoked meats, including ribs, tacos and burrito bowls with carnitas, beef barbacoa or tofu, bratwurst, hot dogs and hamburgers.
As for drinks, the Fermentation Station features local beers, wines and spirits, along with regular beverages for the family.
Although each week will feature similar activities and specials, the music and movies will vary from week to week. Attendees will be able to enjoy live music from performers like Johnny Fox, Electro Funk Assembly Trio, Annie and the Fur Trappers and more.
The free OMNIMAX movies begin at 6:30 p.m. each week. Some of the films include “Men in Black,” “The Martian,” “Apollo 13,” “Wall-E,” “October Sky” and more. The movies are free, but will require tickets, which are available beginning at 5 p.m. at any Science Center box office.
“The movies are all space-themed to tie back to our special exhibition,” Balsamo says. The exhibition – Destination Moon: The Apollo 11 Mission – features the actual command module Columbia from the moon landing and more than 20 artifacts from the mission. The Science Center is one of four museums that gets to host the Smithsonian’s traveling exhibit.
Science at Sunset will also include free mini-tractor rides in GROW. Free parking will be available in the main parking lot located at 5050 Oakland Ave.
